Unshackled in a Decade!
It's 10 years today. 10 years ago today was the day I was struck by this incurable condition.
And this picture sums up the whole journey during these 10 years.
Freedom in a cage.
How?
I've been unshackled. I've been set free. I'm no longer bound by fear or insecurities. At first, I felt that I was locked up in a cage with no freedom. With no life. Sentenced to a life of doom.
And then when my soul started to heal, my perspective changed. My mindset changed.
And then I began to heal physically.
Even though I still have to live in a 'cage' today, I am free!

Food-Dependant Exercise Induced Anaphylaxis
Back then when I had my first anaphylactic attack, I was told of a true story by the doctor who attended to me while I was in the ER. She told me that there was a young man who had no history of allergies. He had gone to the gym as usual. After his gym session, he went to the bakery to buy a bun as he was starving. He then wolfed the whole thing down. He was on his way to the car (he was lucky he was still in the mall) when he suddenly felt ill. He was having an anaphylaxis attack! Before he collapsed, he staggered back into the bakery, demanded for a pen and paper and wrote down his wife's phone number. He then collapsed. The people at the bakery called his wife who then called an ambulance to be sent to where he was.
The ambulance came and sent him to the hospital and he was lucky to have survived without an EpiPen.
Turned out he had food-dependant exercise induced anaphylaxis.
What is food-dependant exercise induced anaphylaxis?
It is a reaction of food plus exercise.
It can happen when one consumes food before an exercise session OR immediately after an exercise session. It can even happen when the person consumes the trigger food on the day of the exercise and not necessarily immediately BEFORE or AFTER the exercise session.
It can also happen when a person takes aspirin on the day they exercise!
The first ever report of this food-dependant exercise induced anaphylaxis was in 1979. The most common trigger in the West is wheat and Asia, shellfish. The exact mechanism of why this happens is still unknown.

Keep Your Expired Epi-Pens!
As there isn't news on when the Epi-Pens shortages will be over, we are now told to hold on to our old and expired Epi-Pens.
Click on LINK to read more about this.
Malaysia does not bring in any other adrenaline auto-injectors other than the Epi-Pen. With this worldwide shortage, that was what I was adviced. Just make sure that the liquid is clear in your Epi-Pen. There is a window on the pen where you can check.

Technology, Allergy & the EpiPen App
Imagine one day you're walking down the street when you suddenly breathed in some peanut-dust or got stung by a bee. You are about to go into a full-blown anaphylactic attack. And you don't have your EpiPen with you.
What's even worse, the ambulance can't reach you in time.
Researchers in a university in Israel have developed an app called EpiMada where people who are near you who carry an EpiPen can be notified via the app. They could administer epinephrine using their personal EpiPen to save you while help is on the way.

9 Years!
9 years ago on this very day, my life changed in ways I could never ever dream of. I could never be 'normal' ever again. It was very difficult as I had a child who was at that time, 4 years old. But it was the 4 year-old-child that kept me going.
I can't say that my immune system is 100% back on track. But I can say that I'm much better where salicylates are concerned. And I've managed to wean off my meds. I'm still in the midst of climbing the icy-mountain chemically-wise. Like my immunologist said, "There are tens of thousands of chemicals in the world. And hundreds are being produced in the shortest amount of time. There are no tests in the world to test which ones are causing havoc. You will never find the answer to this. It is a life-long fight. You just have to learn to maneuver your life."
I guess avoidance has done my immune system much good. By avoiding salicylates, chemicals and unhealthy food, it has given my immune system a chance to heal. Not only did my body heal, my soul healed too.
I no longer ask questions such as, "WHY ME?" or "WHEN will all this end?". I no longer feel that life is unfair. I don't think, "IF ONLY" or "WHAT IF". I have moved on.
Shit happened. And there's nothing that can be done about it.
But this journey has made me to be so much stronger. Made me to be much more resilient. (My husband promoted me from Woman of Steel to Woman of Titanium!) Taught me to be patient. Learned to let go of a lot of things in life. Learned to finally be confident of who I am and couldn't give a damn of what others think of me. Taught me to finally be free of Fear. And I finally learned what Life is all about. I'm grateful and thankful for this journey.
In ancient Greece and Egypt, the number 9 represents completion. As this journey reaches another phase, may the completion of this era bring much health, peace and joy!

Kloraxin
About 4 to 5 months back, I had an infection in the lower eyelid. I went to see a GP and was prescribed Kloraxin gel together with Fucithalmic eye drops.
I was given some very good advice by a doctor I saw about 12 years back. He said when trying new medicine, use one at a time so that if there's any allergy reaction, one would know which is the trigger. Imagine you're given 4 different concoctions and you took all 4 together and then had a reaction. Which is the trigger? You will have no idea.
So I tried Fucithalmic eye drops first. Everything went well.
Then I used the Kloraxin late in the evening. I jumped up from my sleep in the middle of the night with my scalp itching and it felt like it was on fire. And I felt that I was heading towards an anaphylaxis episode.
I got out of bed and washed my eyes. I stayed awake and didn't go back to sleep.
I got a shock the next morning as I looked as though someone had punched me in the eye. Hubby and son said I looked as though I had cried nonstop for hours.
I swallowed a Piriton, called my eye specialist and headed to the clinic immediately.
He told me that normal people with no allergies react to Kloraxin. What more with people like me! He does not even keep Kloraxin in his clinic. He does not prescribe Kloraxin at all!
He gave me another type of antibiotics eye drops which I had used before. That worked very well. The name of the drops is Cravit.
Thank god that the episode did not snowball into an anaphylactic episode!

How to Survive When You Get Struck by the Lightning of Life
The storms in Life are horribly unpredictable. Sometimes you know a storm is coming and you are able to seek shelter from the lighting. Sometimes, it just hits you with no warning whatsoever. And it isn't in the form of Thor. And most of the time, we are blindsided.
Many people have written to me asking me for help to how to overcome ailments which have struck them very suddenly in life. First and foremost, I am not a doctor. But I can share with you what I had adopted in my life to overcome the salicylate sensitivity which resulted in an anaphylaxis (which also caused my life to come to a screeching halt).
1. Keep Calm
I know, it's easier said than done. A thunderbolt just struck your life. How to be calm??? "You are INSANE for even suggesting this Evelyn!" you say.
If you're not calm, how can you plan your next step? It would be running around like a headless chicken.
So, my two cents worth of advice would be this:
*picture taken from HERE
*picture taken from HERE
OR, you could try this:
OR this:
*picture taken from HERE
2. Research, Research, Research
You need to research until the information oozes out from every single pore that you have, from your eyes, your nose, your ears.
You cannot ask another person to do the research for you. Did you ask someone to study for you and sit for your driving exam? Or your school and college exams?
YOU did all the studying and research for your exams! It's the same now. Don't ever ask me to READ and SUMMARIZE all the information in the links that I gave you. The time that you spend researching about the ailment that has struck your life will give you understanding to what you must do and how to do it. You need to internalize the information.
3. Patience
Rome was not build within a day. Thus, your immune system will not be 'normal' overnight. It takes time. And it takes patience. And sometimes, it may take forever.
This isn't a 50 or 100 metre dash. This is a marathon race. So if you think you can outrun the ailment, you'll be in for a very great disappointment.
I would say that the anaphylaxis chose the right person to strike. I was a very impatient person. You can ask my mother. Having this medical condition has taught me much patience.
4. Know Your Limit (Will POWER)
Just because you are now finally able to eat the food you've not eaten for so many, many, many years, it does not mean you can now gorge yourself like a glutton pig. Just because you can now smell some fragrance, it does not mean you can expose yourself to the Eau de Parfums (a.k.a. Little Miss/Mister Stinky) all around you.
You need to have the will power to hold back.
OR, you can do this:
*picture taken from HERE
5. Use Common Sense
If you know you cannot eat a certain food or smell a certain smell, why must you go and eat or expose yourself to it? What are you trying to prove? Have some common sense.
*picture taken from HERE
6. It's OK to Fall Down and Fail
I've lost count of the times I fell down and failed throughout these 8 years plus. If a person tells you that they've never failed or fallen down in life, that person is full of shit.
*picture taken from HERE
*picture taken from HERE
7. Keep on Moving
Once you've picked yourself up from where you fell down and failed, you need to move on. And to keep on moving forward.
*picture taken from HERE
8. Get Help
If you're unable to pick yourself up and move on, get help. Talk to people who can help you. Seek help when you need it. There's nothing to be ashamed about in needing help.
*picture taken from HERE
9. Be Happy
Find that one thing in your life that makes you happy even though life truly sucks generally.
It could be your family or your child.
10. Last but not least, SWEAR LIKE A SAILOR!

8 Years
Damn.
In a blink of an eye, 8 years have passed by.
Someone asked me this question recently, "How come you're not well after 8 years? Shouldn't you be well by now? I mean, you have been on your salicylate-free-diet for 8 years now!"
If I could answer that question, I would be the world's leading geneticist!
First of all, I am not only salicylate sensitive. I am also chemically sensitive. And I'm sure most of us know how many gazillion types of chemicals there are in this world. I mean some have names longer than a railway track.
Don't believe me?
Read below.
The chemical name for Titin has 189,819 letters! This is only PART of its name;
Methionylthreonylthreonylglutaminylalanyl...isoleucine.
Even with our smartest brains around on this earth, we humans are still unable to test for every sickness that exists today. Thus, the term idiopathic!
"Doctor, I have this pain in my body which does not go away!"
And after months of tests which do not yield any results that pinpoint the source of the pain, the doctor will say "It's idiopathic!"
"Doctor, I can't seem to overcome this severe weakness in my immune system."
Test and test and test for months.
Doctor comes to the conclusion; "It's idiopathic!"
And then "Idiopathic" will slowly evolve to "You're stressed!"
Me: Of course I am stressed! YOU stress me out doctor! You don't know nothing and yet you prescribe me medicines like candies on Halloween night! Hell, you even sound like Nightmare on Elm Street.
Doctor: "Eat this medicine and you'll be well! See me in two weeks."
And the bi-weekly appointments will repeat themself with even more candies being given out as though they were free.
So how come I am not HEALED after 8 years?
These are what I can come up with:
1. I don't know. I am not a doctor. My doctor doesn't even know what's wrong with me.
2. I don't freaking know. All I know is that SHIT HAPPENS.
3. I really don't know and I really don't care.
4. I can only come up with one word: IDIOPATHIC.
Happy 8th Idiopathic year to ME!
Haha....

7 Years
Seven.
In the book of Harry Potter, seven is said to be the most powerful magical number.
Seven is the number of notes in a traditional Western diatonic scale.
Seven represents the deadly sins and also denotes completeness and perfection.
Not forgetting how the world was made in seven days (if you believe in the Bible).
In Judaism, seven (shiv`a) is the number of days of mourning.
In the world of mathematics, seven is a happy number, a safe prime and a lucky prime.
-------------------------------
I hope that this journey of mine in its seventh year, will be the last year in mourning where my health is concerned. I would be truly free of the shackles that salicylate and chemical sensitivities have placed on my life.
I hope that this seventh year would complete the musical scales of this journey and thus, open my path to an array of even more musical scales that I can paint my life with.
I hope that my new world would be made complete in this seventh year.
I hope that this seventh year would be an even happier and safer year for me.
And I hope that in this seventh magical year, I will overcome and slay my Voldermort and be healthy and strong again where my immune system is concerned.

The Happening Placebo Glossary
1. Bowel Anaphylaxis
Diarrhoea to the point you feel that your entrails will be expunged at any minute. It's like an exorcism going on, but it is in the bowels. It's like the devil is having a party and is going to rip out everything from inside you.
2. Multiple Chemical Survivor
You basically cannot tolerate the scent of anything remotely human as they drown themselves in everything chemical. You're a survivor as you survived the catastrophe of humans-all-chemical.
3. Anal-phylaxis
A disease which chooses to be anal at every wrong point of time. It enjoys being a pain-in-the-ass just like how fleas are to dogs and flies are to cows. It just irritates you to no end and causes you to suffer immensely. It wants to kill you. And transform the angel in you to curse and swear like a sailor.
4. The Walking Dead
Everybody (well, almost everybody) in the the world is awesome as they are like the 'Walking Dead'. Shuffling about sniffing for scents of chemicals. Drooling and warbling like gargling infantiles, the 'Walking Dead' shuffles to the next unsuspecting victim and passes on to them the disease of 'Love Thy Neighbour the Chemical.
5. Allergy
A condition that is basically you reacting adversely to stupid people.
An example of a conversation between Miss A and Miss B.
Miss A: There is no such thing as chemical sensitivity.
Miss B: (Starts to suffocate.) Get away from me!!! I'm severely allergic to you!!!!!!
6. Sensitive
A person who is believed to respond to paranormal influences.
'Paranormal' = Relating to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation.
Example: You becoming ill upon smelling someone's so-very-faint-fragrance-that-it's-like-not-even-there!
YOU are sensitive. It has never been proven that one can become ill from such non-existent smells!!!
7. HYPERSENSITIVE
You becoming ill upon smelling something which is not even there at all.
Example:
You: (Starts to feel the throat tightening.)
Your friend: Stop being so hypersensitive. I didn't use any perfume today. I only used it last night. Don't tell me you can even smell that from last night. You're being overly-hypersensitive.
8. Hives
Miss X: OMG! I'm breaking out in hives!
Miss Z: Don't be stupid. You can't be breaking out in hives. Hives are the bees' nest.

A Severe Reaction!
I had a very, severe reaction yesterday which resulted in me taking one Xyzal and Zrytec together to stop the pain. It was escalating to the point which I felt was turning into an anaphylaxis attack. This has not happen in a VERY long time now. The thing is, it was not caused by food. I did not eat anything prior to this attack.
Yesterday was Joel's school's swimming gala in which he took part. I got up at 5am to get ready. Got my food and had some oats for breakfast at 6am. We left the house at 7am.
Arrived at the school before 7.30am. Joel was nervous but he swam with all his might. Bagged two bronze medals. He did really good. He gave his best. Which makes him a winner. Hubby and I are so very proud of him.
We then went to a mall for the guys to grab some meal before heading home. The little swimmer was so very hungry!
The guys went to eat and I went to my usual organic shop to get some groceries. Every corner of the shop was saturated in lemongrass + citronella incense smell. It was so overpowering. This isn't the first time I had smelt this. I left the shop after 2 or 3 minutes after paying for my stuff.
I went to buy some stuff while the guys ate their meals.
An hour later, I felt a mild tingling in my head. A migraine was coming. I thought it must be the tiredness from being awake at 5am. Plus the stress and being tense when Joel was swimming. Plus the insomnia of waking up at 2.30am and 3am for the past one week as period was around the corner. Plus me having my period too. So I thought all these added together which was the reason to the tingling in my head.
And then it became worse. To the point I felt nauseated. Only at 2pm, I had my lunch which was now horrible as I felt so ill. By the time we went home, it was so bad that I crawled into bed after showering. The pain was so excruciating and my mouth started tingling. It was an attack from being exposed to something I was sensitive/allergic to. But I did not eat anything before the attack.
I kept thinking to what I did wrong.
My mind was blank. I couldn't think of anything that I ate wrong.
I got out of bed at 6+ and my whole system was on the verge of collapsing. Every single smell in the house was so profound and pronounced. My chest started to hurt. I wanted to die from the pain. I could feel the insides of my right ear swelling up.
I knew I was heading to a full-blown attack if I did not do something about it.
I took one Xyzal and one Zrytec tablet and waited.
And then it struck me! The incense smell in the organic shop!!! That was the trigger.
But I haven't reacted to smells in years now. Maybe 2 years. I have been on a controlled diet where salicylates are concerned. Why was I so susceptible? Maybe it was the insomnia, the hormones and the stress that caused my immune system to be so weak?
I did ask them to why they needed to saturate the shop with such strong incense. Apparently, the shopping mall requires the shops at the lower ground to clear their pipes quite frequently as most of the food shops are located at the lower ground. They needed to clear their pipes so that the cooking oil would not seep back into the ducts and cause the lower ground to stink. But when the pipes are cleared, there will be a horrifying smell for a short while. Thus the burning of the incense to mask the smell. The smell of death indeed. It almost caused me an attack.
Within an hour, I could feel such relief. The pain was lessened by half. My chest did not feel so tight. I felt relief coursing through my veins.
I have been groggy and in a foggy state of mind the whole of today. For about 2 years now, I have not been taking any meds when an attack comes. I could not fight it this round.
Hopefully my system will be strong once again.
